SUMMARY:PhD Colloquium: J. S. Bach's Church Cantatas in Context\, Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:As music director for the town of Leipzig\, J. S. Bach (1685-1750) was responsible for the music at the town’s four main churches. It was for this context that Bach composed his church cantatas\, works of music that grew out of the assigned Gospel for the day and have been referred to as a “second sermon.” This colloquium examines Bach’s cantatas in relation to the liturgy\, theology\, poetry\, and music of the eighteenth-century Lutheran church. It further reflects on contexts in which this music is heard today\, concluding with lessons we can learn from Bach’s approach to church music\, whether we are performing his music or not. \nAll are invited!

SUMMARY:Healthy Dialogue Series: Fellipe Do Vale
DESCRIPTION:The Healthy Dialogue Series welcomes Fellipe do Vale\, Assistant Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School\, winner of the 2023 “Emerging Public Intellectual” award\, and author of Gender As Love: A Theological Account of Human Identity\, Embodied Desire\, and Our Social Worlds. \nA graduate of Calvin’s Philosophy and Gender Studies departments\, Dr. do Vale’s research is primarily on the connection between moral theology and theological anthropology. He focuses on gender\, but also writes and teaches on political theology\, theology of race\, and other aspects of human identity\, especially from an eschatological point of view. In Gender as Love\, do Vale takes a theological approach to understanding gender\, employing both biblical exegesis and historical theology and emphasizing the role human love plays in shaping our identities. His approach is unique in that it avoids the present impasse between social constructionist and biological essentialist paradigms and emphasizes love as identity forming. \nThe Healthy Dialogue Series is a collaboration between the Office of the Provost and The Sexuality Series. It reflects Calvin’s commitments to engage challenging conversations with humility\, love\, charity\, and respect\, eager to learn with and from each other. The lecture will be held on November 7\, 2024\, at 4:00 PM at the Meeter Center Lecture Hall. \nDr. Mesick is a scholar of the New Testament and early Christian origins\, focusing especially on Paul\, the Corinthian correspondence\, early church conflict\, and the interrelated topics of health\, illness\, psychology\, and emotions.

DESCRIPTION:The Healthy Dialogue Series presents a conversation about 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture\, a feature documentary that follows the story of researchers who trace the origins of a mistranslation of the Bible in 1946. It chronicles the discovery of archives at Yale University which cast doubt on any biblical basis for LGBTQIA+ prejudice. Featuring commentary from scholars as well as opposing pastors\, including the personal stories of the film’s creators\, 1946 is at once challenging\, enlightening\, and inspiring. \nFollowing the showing of the film\, Trevor Thompson (adjunct professor in Calvin’s Department of Religion and Senior Acquisitions Editor at Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company) will guide us in a conversation with Dr. David Lincicum (Professor of Theology at Notre Dame University) and Dr. Jeffrey Weima (Professor of New Testament at Calvin Theological Seminary). \nThe Healthy Dialogue Series is a collaboration between the Office of the Provost and The Sexuality Series.
