DESCRIPTION:Location: Calvin University\, Science Building Classroom 110 \nHost/Contact: Frans van Liere (frans.vanliere@calvin.edu)\, Department of Historical Studies\, Calvin University \nLecture Title: “My conversion from Zionism: the challenge to the church in the age of Gaza” by Dr. Mark Braverman \nDr. Mark Braverman is a Jewish American who has been deeply involved in the international church movement for Palestinian rights for the past two decades. Raised in the potent combination of rabbinic Judaism and political Zionism that has come to dominate Jewish identity\, Dr. Braverman’s encounter with the occupation of Palestine and the theology of the Palestinian Christians led him to question Zionism not only from a human rights perspective but with regard to core theological concepts and our understanding of the Bible. Dr. Braverman will discuss the historical context for the October 7 2023 attack and the theological\, hermeneutical\, ecclesiological and interfaith issues arising from Israel and Palestine that confront the church and Christian institutions of higher learning today. Dr. Braverman is Executive Director of Kairos USA. He is Research Fellow in Systematic Theology and Ecclesiology at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and affiliate faculty at St. Stephen’s University in St. Stephen\, Canada. He has lectured and trained extensively in the United States and internationally on Kairos theology\, Christian Zionism\, post-holocaust theology\, and Christian-Jewish relations. He the author of two books and numerous journal articles and book chapters.
