Food Pantry and Clothing Bank

The Idema Food Pantry is a unique ministry subsidized by the seminary that offers groceries to needy seminary students and their families. The Clothes Closet provides used clothing, shoes and various household items free of charge to all seminarians and their families. They are administered by the Student Senate in cooperation with the Dean of Students office and are run by the students and their spouses.

The Idema Food Pantry and Clothes Closet are located in the basement of the seminary.

1. Who can use the Idema Food Pantry?

Student and their families may use the Idema Food Pantry if their income is below the income eligibility guidelines stated below. The guidelines are received from the Michigan Emergency Food Assistance Program.

2. What do students need to do to use the Idema Food Pantry?

Students need to register online with their name, address, phone number(s), email address(es) and birth date as well as with their family’s information; please see below. Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank, the institution from which food is received, require this information. Each household that uses the Idema Food Pantry is also asked to volunteer 2 to 4 hours per month. The Idema Food Pantry and Clothes Closet is run by volunteers except for the Coordinator, that is a paid position. There is an on-line volunteer sign up; please see below.

3. Who pays for the food?

Food is bought from the Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank for an average of 16 cents per pound. Each week, approximately $150 is spent to purchase approximately 900 to 1000 pounds of food. Students and their families are asked to make a donation of $2 or $3 each time they use the pantry to cover some of the costs. Most of the funding is received from the Seminary, the Student Senate, and other supporters of the seminary.

4. When is the Idema Food Pantry open?

During the school year the Idema Food Pantry is open on Monday and Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:20 pm. The summer hours will be Wednesdays from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will begin June 5, 2013.

5. When is the Clothes Closet open?

The Clothes Closet is open year round Monday to Saturday.
