Internships

Calvin Theological Seminary values partnering with churches and ministries to provide internship opportunities for students preparing to become pastors (M.Div. program), and students preparing for specialized ministry staff roles or to become Ministry Associates (MA programs). Please contact the CTS Mentored Ministries Office to explore how we can work together in forming students for ministry.

Internships for Students Preparing for Pastoral Ministry (M.Div. Program)

CTS seeks to partner with churches/ministries who will offer one of two basic types of internships for students preparing for ordained pastoral ministry.

  • Cross-Cultural Internship (XCI) The XCI is an immersion experience in a ministry setting and cultural context distinctly different (economically, ethnically, ecclesiastically, etc.) from the student’s own background. The general goals of the XCI are to provide an experience in which students can gain perspective on their own culture, engage, explore and articulate the contextual nature of ministry, develop a deepened perspective on the world-wide church, and reflect more broadly on their own call to ministry. The 200 hour minimum required time commitment for this internship may be met via a 5 week full-time internship during the summer or a part-time internship over the course of the summer and/or during the academic year. The Mentored Ministries Office selects and invites ministry sites to apply with whom it believe the goals of this internship can best be achieved for our students.
  • Pastoral Ministry Internship (PMI) The PMI provides students with a pastoral ministry leadership experience in which they are able to deepen pastoral identity and further develop ministry practice skills. Students are prepared and expected to develop the capacity to communicate the message of the gospel in authentic and contextually appropriate ways, so that communities of disciples are encouraged and further formed by the student’s presence and ministry. The 400 hour minimum required time commitment for this internship may be met via a 10 week full-time internship during the summer or a part-time internship over the course of the summer and/or during the academic year. Churches/ministries may indicate their interest in students completing this internship over a longer period of time, and CTS will seek to match interested students to these longer term opportunities.

Internships for Students Preparing for Specialized Ministries (M.A. Programs)

CTS seeks to partner with churches/ministries who will offer internships in the areas of students’ specializations (e.g. worship, church planting, evangelism & missions, educational ministry, youth & family, and pastoral care) or that will prepare them for their role as a Ministry Associate.

  • Specialized Ministry InternshipThis internship provides students with a ministry experience that immerses and provides the student with a significant leadership opportunity in the area of the student’s ministry specialization. The 200 hour minimum required time commitment for this internship may be met via a 5 week full-time internship during the summer or a part-time internship over the course of the summer and/or during the academic year.
